U SPORTS welcomes additional funding to Canadian sport system
U SPORTS applauds the Government of Canada for its significant and timely investment in sport, as outlined in yesterday’s Spring Economic Update. This announcement represents an important opportunity to further strengthen the impact of sport across the country.
“We are very encouraged by the government’s investment in the Canadian sport system,” said U SPORTS Chief Executive Officer Pierre Arsenault. “Every day, we witness the positive and transformative impact of sport alongside our 58 member universities in every province. This investment provides much-needed support to help ensure sport continues to play a meaningful role in strengthening communities and shaping what it means to be Canadian.”
U SPORTS and its members represent the largest collective employer of professional coaches in Canada and serve as a cornerstone for athlete and coach development. Across the country, U SPORTS programs help create pathways to national teams, professional sport, and leadership roles throughout the broader sport system. U SPORTS student-athletes go on to become Olympians, professional athletes, and leaders across multiple sectors.
We extend our sincere appreciation to Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Government of Canada for their continued commitment to a strong and sustainable sport system. We also thank Secretary of State (Sport) Adam van Koeverden for his leadership and advocacy in advancing the role of sport in Canada.
