Axemen rally past Dinos to reach fifth-place game at U SPORTS Men’s Final 8
Ryan Regault scored 21 points and the Acadia Axemen used a dominant second half to defeat the host Calgary Dinos 88-77 in the second consolation game Saturday at the 2026 U SPORTS Men’s Final 8, presented by Student Housing Calgary, at Jack Simpson Gym.
With the victory, Acadia improves to 19-14 overall (12-8 AUS) and advances to Sunday’s fifth-place game at 11 a.m. Calgary finishes its season at 17-17 (12-8 CW).
Regault, named Acadia’s player of the game, led the comeback with an efficient shooting performance, knocking down six three-pointers while adding eight rebounds and three assists.
The Axemen trailed early as Calgary came out strong in front of the home crowd. The Dinos built a 26-18 lead after the opening quarter and stretched their advantage to 46-35 by halftime behind balanced scoring and strong work on the glass from player of the game Dre Francis.
Acadia turned the momentum after the break.
The Axemen erupted for 27 points in the third quarter while limiting Calgary to just 15, erasing the halftime deficit and grabbing a narrow 62-61 lead heading into the fourth. Regault sparked the surge with a pair of three-pointers during the run as Acadia’s perimeter shooting began to open the floor.
Acadia continued to pull away in the final frame, outscoring Calgary 26-16 to seal the victory.
Robbie Grant paced the Axemen offensively with 23 points and seven rebounds, while Briawne Wilson added 15 points off the bench in the win.
Francis led Calgary with a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds, adding three steals and two assists in 32 minutes. Daniel Chijioke scored 15 points for the Dinos, while Eli Djordjevic contributed 14 points and five assists.
Acadia shot 40.6 per cent from beyond the arc, hitting 13 three-pointers, while Calgary struggled from long distance at 23.1 per cent.
The Axemen will play for fifth place Sunday morning, as they look to better their sixth-place finish at their last Final 8 appearance in 2018. The host Dinos see their season come to an end after their third Final 8 appearance this decade.
