Manitoba sweeps Windsor to capture national bronze
The Manitoba Bisons are back on the national podium.
Manitoba swept the host Windsor Lancers 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-23) on Sunday afternoon to claim the bronze medal at the 2026 BioSteel U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship at the Toldo Lancer Centre.
The victory marks Manitoba’s first national medal in men’s volleyball since also winning bronze in 2012.
The Bisons finished their season with a 19-9 record (14-6 Canada West), while Windsor concluded the campaign at 20-5 (18-2 OUA).
Manitoba controlled much of the match offensively, hitting .292 as a team and recording 43 kills compared to Windsor’s 32.
The opening set was tightly contested, with the Bisons pulling away late to secure a 25-23 win. Manitoba’s attack, orchestrated by setter Sammy Ludwig, generated steady scoring opportunities, while Windsor leaned heavily on Gustavo Siqueira to keep pace.
The Bisons seized momentum in the second set. Strong serving and a solid block helped Manitoba build an early lead before cruising to a 25-16 victory to take a commanding two-set advantage.
Facing elimination, Windsor battled in the third set, trading points with Manitoba down the stretch. The Lancers closed the gap late, but the Bisons held firm, sealing the match with another 25-23 decision to secure the medal.
Owen Weekes led Manitoba offensively with 16 kills, while Jordon Heppner added six kills and four block assists. Jonah Dueck also chipped in with six kills in the victory.
Setter Sammy Ludwig was named Manitoba’s player of the game after distributing 36 assists and guiding the Bisons’ efficient attack.
For Windsor, Markus Law-Heese earned player-of-the-game honours with 27 assists and five digs. Gustavo Siqueira paced the Lancers offensively with 12 kills, while Conaire Taub contributed six.
With the win, Manitoba leaves Windsor with the program’s first national medal in 14 years, capping a strong tournament run with a convincing straight-sets victory over the host Lancers.
