Laval caps season with consolation win over Gee-Gees
In a decisive display, the Laval Rouge et Or concluded their 2025 campaign with a 40-14 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the fifth-place game of the CGIS U SPORTS Women’s Rugby Championship, presented by The Rec Room Granville at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver.
The game, a third meeting between the RSEQ rivals after Laval won the conference championship, was controlled by the Rouge et Or from the opening whistle. Laval’s attack was relentless in the first half, building an insurmountable 19-0 lead by the break.
The scoring started early for Laval, with Camille Arvin-Berod dotting down for a try in the 12th minute. Fly-half Anne Lamothe added the conversion, setting the tone for a near-perfect day with the boot. First-half tries from Anne-Sophie Carreau and Maude Chabot, both converted by Lamothe, solidified Laval's dominant position heading into halftime.
The Gee-Gees showed a spark of life to open the second half, with Alysia Comtois scoring a try in the 42nd minute, promptly converted by Claire Bennett. However, any momentum was quickly snuffed out by Laval, who responded with two tries in rapid succession. Arvin-Berod scored her second of the match just a minute later, restoring Laval's commanding lead.
The latter part of the game belonged to Laval's Sandrine Faucher, who was named a Player of the Game. The powerful number 8 scored two tries in the 48th and 54th minutes, showcasing Laval's continued offensive pressure. Lamothe’s conversions on both tries capped strong kicking performance as she made five of six conversion attempts.
Ottawa managed a final consolation try from Grace Dingwall at the 70-minute mark, with fellow Player of the Game Sydney Noseworthy adding the conversion, bringing the final score to 40-14.
The victory cemented an outstanding season for the Laval Rouge et Or, who finish with a near-perfect 10-1 record (6-0 in the RSEQ), with their only bleming coming in Wednesday’s national quarterfinal. The Gee-Gees conclude their year with a strong 7-4 (5-1 RSEQ) mark, finishing sixth in the nation.
