Tara Isama’s 28th-minute goal stood as the winner as the Cape Breton Capers edged the Guelph Gryphons 1-0 on Friday in the first consolation game of the U SPORTS Women’s Soccer Championship.
The victory, anchored by a shutout performance from goalkeeper Ellie Lancaster, sends the AUS champion Capers (11-3-3) to the tournament’s fifth-place game on Saturday. The loss ends the season for the OUA finalist Gryphons (10-4-3).
In a tightly contested match, the Capers broke through just before the half-hour mark. Makenna Bowser delivered the assist, finding Isama who finished for her first goal of the national tournament.
The Gryphons controlled large stretches of the match, outshooting the Capers 13-12 and holding a decisive 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. However, they could not solve Lancaster, who turned away all nine shots she faced to earn the clean sheet.
Guelph’s best chances came from Olivia Brown, who fired a team-high five shots, three of which were on target, and Elise Bell, who put two of her three attempts on goal. Sabrina Spano made four saves in the loss for the Gryphons.
