Goalkeeper Juliana Ottoni recorded a five-save shutout and defender Devon Eisen had a goal and an assist as the Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the McMaster Marauders 2-0 on Friday in the second consolation game of the U SPORTS Women’s Soccer Championship.
The victory sends the Varsity Blues (13-3-1) to the tournament’s fifth-place game on Saturday. The loss ends the season for the host Marauders (8-6-2).
Toronto opened the scoring in the 25th minute. Eisen sent a well-placed pass to Emilija Lucic, who finished for her first goal of the national tournament to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.
Eisen then provided the insurance marker herself in the 57th minute, scoring an unassisted goal to put the game out of reach at 2-0.
Ottoni was solid in the Toronto net, turning away all five shots she faced to secure the clean sheet. Her counterpart, McMaster's Lucy Duffy, made three saves in the loss.
The Marauders struggled to solve Toronto’s defence, with their best chances coming from Emma Fluit, who put both of her shots on target in the first half.
