The Trinity Western Spartans scored three unanswered goals in the second half to overcome an early deficit and defeat the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-1 in the third quarterfinal of the U SPORTS Women's Soccer Championship on Thursday.
The Ontario champion Varsity Blues stunned the Canada West finalists just over a minute into the match, with Maddy Mah finding the net to give Toronto a 1-0 lead.
Despite dominating possession and outshooting Toronto 8-4 in the first half, Trinity Western was repeatedly turned away by a resilient Blues defense and goalkeeper Maria Godoy-Atrash, who made five saves before the break to preserve the lead.
The Spartans' relentless pressure finally paid off in the 57th minute. Sophie Crowther leveled the score, finishing a play set up by Mya Bajpai. Crowther then completed her brace just seven minutes later, putting Trinity Western ahead 2-1 in the 64th minute with an assist from Mansha Sidhu.
The Spartans sealed the victory in the final minutes of the match. Crowther turned provider, setting up substitute Luciana Andrews for an insurance goal in the 89th minute to bring the final score to 3-1.
Trinity Western's offensive onslaught was overwhelming, as they finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots and put 11 of those attempts on target. Spartans goalkeeper Yasmine Pahal made three saves to secure the comeback win.
With the victory, Trinity Western advances to the national semifinal on Friday evening. The Toronto Varsity Blues will play in a consolation game on Friday afternoon.
