The second-seeded Montréal Carabins used a dominant offensive performance and a stellar showing from their goalkeeper to defeat the host and seventh-seeded McMaster Marauders 2-0 in the fourth quarterfinal of the U SPORTS Women’s Soccer Championship on Thursday.
The Quebec conference champions broke through in the 53rd minute when substitute Maika Sanesac scored her first goal of the season, finishing a play set up by Shayla He to give Montréal a 1-0 lead.
The Carabins sealed the victory in the 81st minute as another substitute, Jeanne Even, found the net with an assist from Justine Lalande to double the advantage and put the game out of reach.
The scoreline belied a match defined by Montréal's relentless attack and McMaster goalkeeper Ali Mudie's heroics. The Carabins fired 21 shots, with 18 on target, but Mudie stood tall with 15 saves to keep the Marauders in contention for much of the game.
At the other end, Montréal goalkeeper Anna Bianca Stevens-Cardin recorded a one-save shutout, as a stout Carabins defense limited the host Marauders to just two shots on goal despite McMaster holding a slight edge in corner kicks.
With the victory, the Carabins advance to the national semifinal on Friday night, where they will face the Trinity Western Spartans. The host McMaster Marauders see their championship run end and will play the Toronto Varsity Blues in a consolation game Friday afternoon.
