The Université de Montréal Carabins are one win away from a national championship. The Quebec champions put on a clinical display Friday, defeating the Trinity Western Spartans 4-0 in the semifinal of the U SPORTS Women's Soccer Championship at Ron Joyce Stadium.
Sara Ricciardelli, Maika Sanesac, Gabrielle Cote and Sara Trandji scored for the Carabins, who were efficient and relentless in their attack. Goalkeeper Anna Bianca Stevens-Cardin made six saves to secure the clean sheet.
Montreal set the tone early, with Ricciardelli opening the scoring in the 14th minute, finishing a feed from Jeanne Even. The Carabins delivered a crushing blow right on the stroke of halftime, as Sanesac found the net, also assisted by Even, to double the lead before the break.
The Carabins continued to press in the second half. Cote made it 3-0 in the 65th minute, converting a pass from Rafaelle Robitaille-Bourgeois. Trandji then put an exclamation point on the victory, scoring an unassisted goal in the final seconds of the match.
The Montreal defence was stifling, limiting a Trinity Western side that managed only two shots in the second half.
With the win, the Carabins advance to Sunday's national championship game at 5 p.m., where they will face the UBC
Thunderbirds, who won the first semifinal.
The Trinity Western Spartans will play for the bronze medal Sunday at 1:30 p.m. against the Laval Rouge et Or.
